Frequently Asked MEDIC 94 Billing Questions.

Why does it cost so much for paramedic services?

Having a significant amount of highly trained staff, vehicles and equipment are dedicated to our community 24 hours a day 7 days a week to answer emergency 9-1-1 calls. The high cost involved in staffing, training and equipping these systems is paid for through a combination of billing for services and support from the surrounding municipal governments.

All of the local ambulance services have paramedics in our area, don’t they?

No, they do not. All of the local ambulances services in our primary services area, Union Fire Company of Oxford, West Grove Fire Company, Christiana Ambulance and the Avondale Fire Company Ambulance Division provide basic life support services ambulances staffed by Emergency medical Technicians. SCCEMS provides advanced life support services staffed by paramedics. Depending on the type of call, an SCCEMS advanced life support paramedic is dispatched and will evaluate the patient to see if there is a need for advanced life support. EMS agencies are required by state and local protocol to have ALS respond to certain type of calls.

I have HMO, Medicare or Medicaid insurance, can you bill them directly?

We do submit claims to various insurance companies. There are many steps to this process, which if not handled immediately will result in a delay of receiving your payment. SCCEMS provides each insurance company with a copy of the patient care record with each claim. Federal guidelines require the local ambulance service to combine their bill and our bill for services for patients who are covered by Medicare.

I received a bill and I have insurance?

SCCEMS attempts to obtain insurance information from the receiving hospital after your care is complete and you are transferred to the Emergency Department staff. At times, we are unable to obtain the insurance information from your hospital chart. Please contact our billing service with any updated insurance information.

I was in a car accident – how is that billed?

If you were transported as a result of a motor vehicle crash, your medical expenses will be billed under your vehicle’s insurance. Any excess will be billed to your health insurance carrier.

I was injured on the job and I received a bill, why is that?

Please ask your employer to contact our billing vendor immediately regarding this. We need to have your workers compensation carrier information.

I received a check from my insurance company, what do I do?

Many insurance companies send the reimbursement check directly to the patient. If you should receive a check, please sign the backside of the check and forwarded it to either Southern Chester County EMS or our billing vendor at the address listed below.
